Weddings - Tips for Cheap Weddings

Despite the hype, weddings don’t actually have to cost a fortune. There are a number of ways you can save money and have an inexpensive wedding with few people being any the wiser. Here are some suggestions:

  • Shop around – You don’t have to buy your wedding dress, bridesmaids' dresses, or suits from a wedding shop. You can get something that's right you, and that might only need minor altering, from second hand stores, department stores, evening wear and formal wear shops, and even from markets for a fraction of the cost. Jewellery can also be bought this way, including your wedding rings.

  • Enlist the help of friends and family – Know someone good with flower arranging? Someone who can take good photos? How about someone who knows their way around a video camera? Or someone good at makeup and hair styling? Someone with a flashy car? Or a big backyard? Someone who can sew? Or someone who can feed an army? You can enlist all of these people to help you with many aspects of your wedding at little to no cost. Just make sure you invite them to the party.

  • Make things yourself – You can always make your own decorations and invitations. Craft and decorations stores sell a wide range of items including paper, envelopes, beads, balloons, and much more. All you need is a bit of time and patience. Check out Getting Hitched: DIY Weddings for more craft ideas.

  • Borrow items – A really good way to save money is to use things that you, your friends, or your family already have like lights, glassware, and serving trays. You could even borrow the wedding dress and shoes if you can get the sizes right. And the bridesmaids could always wear something they already own instead of being made to wear matching outfits (and they will thank you for it).

  • Cheat – One of the best ways to have a cheap wedding is to cheat. Buy inexpensive alternatives or items in bulk. A good example is with wine – use clean skins and most people won’t have a clue. When it comes to wedding decorations or table centerpieces, there are no rules that you must use real flowers. Use candles instead, particularly if your reception is being held outside – they will provide a nice ambience later in the evening.

  • Recycled Love - by Natalie Hatch - 'They paid for it themselves you know.' This titbit of information caused the appropriate gasps of horror from her two socialite friends, demanding to know how on earth they did it. 'Hold on, I’ll tell you, I’ll tell you, just keep your expensive knickers on,' Marnie waved them back.
